The Joy Road Book
The remarkable story of how a small group of volunteers sparked a movement, rallying thousands of partners to champion literacy.
In 1999, a small group of volunteers set out to help children in Detroit. What began with winter coats soon uncovered a much greater need—and inspired a mission that would bring together educators, businesses, foundations, community leaders, volunteers, and countless others who believed every child deserved the opportunity to read.
JOY ROAD tells the remarkable story of Beyond Basics—the challenges, breakthroughs, students, and people who helped turn an idea into a growing literacy movement.
It’s a story about reading. But even more, it’s a story about what becomes possible when a community comes together around a shared purpose.
